Last night was an interesting twist in my career as an artist. I told you all that I hung a show for Mixed Media Artists of Houston in Brazosport Art Center last week. The opening was Sat night. When we arrived one of the art league volunteers asked my husband if he wanted to see the work they almost banned. I knew it had to be one of mine <VBG> Sure enough “Cherry” had caused quite a stir.

Third grade students had been in the center on Friday and were asked to sketch their favorite piece. A little boy picked Cherry and got busy sketching nipples.

This led to phone calls to the center by the parents or perhaps the teacher,  and a hasty meeting of the Brazosport Art League was held. Apparently it was a little heated as some people were angry about censorship and others more worried about the children.

In the end the group voted to stand by the artist (me!) and “Cherry” is still on display without bandaids (as someone apparently suggested as a joke).

This may be the pinnacle of my career. Every artist dreams of being BANNED!

HeART Attack

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I almost had a heart attack to day when I saw this on the  news and  realized my QN 05 quilt was in the mail home via Fed Ex Click here
My dogs started barking, I ran to the computer to check the fed ex tracking number Dairy Barn sent me. The computer dinged in a new message from FE saying your package has been delivered. I walked back to the door where the dogs were still barking to see the truck pulling off and my package on the bench outside the door.

Whew…. just in time for my solo show at the local community college. They have new gallery and called me last month to do the solo show based on the recommendation of my local arts alliance director. I hang that show in two days

Then I felt bad when I realized I would never meet Hilary Fletcher

Mixed Media Artists of Houston

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Running my legs off these days. Today I helped hang the Mixed Media Artists of Houston Show. It is always a challenge hanging an unjuried group show like this one. We have a very diverse group and it is hard to create a show where the pieces hang in harmony. We were there for 6 hours. Friday I hang my solo show at Alvin Community College. Hopefully that will be a little easier. has the virtual gallery of what we hung.

The Opening at the Cancer Center

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I had a great time weekend before last when the opening for Making a Mark happened. It started off Friday withe a party for the kids in the Center complete with a miniture horse named “Spirit” who could play piano, was house trained, could count and allowed kids to decorate him with ribbons and bows for two hours. He weighed 150 lbs had tiny blue hooves. “Spirit Horses: Dreams” the quilt was shown at the entrance to the center. A DJ led the kids in “The Hokey Pokey” and other such fair!

Sunday was more grown up. 370 pieces of childrens art was hung and the kids posed for pictures in front of their work. There were refreshments and face painters and crafting going on in the corners. I bought a great picture from a young man who lost his fight with cancer. His mom donates a piece every year. I got to meet her and the dad. It is an amazing piece for a 7 year old and I recognized the piece she had donated this year as from the same artist.

Seam Stress

Fabric for the art car

Thinking of mounting a large thimble ( small bathroom trash can) and spool (from home depot, it used to have electric cord on it,) and making a big red pincushion and my daughter says she can make the large pins and needles to put around on the car oput of dowel rods and Styrofoam balls and paper mache.

Decoupaging the fabric on with Outdoor Modge Podge

Polymer resin dipping rotary cutters and scissors for attaching to the wheels as custom hubcaps.

Kacy will make a giant button which can go on the back where a spare tire would be t.
